When the Story Is the Whole Point

When the Story Is the Whole Point

Not every mobile game needs to keep you grinding. Some of the best ones I've played this year barely have systems at all — they're just good stories you tap through, and that's plenty.

Lanterns of Vael is my go-to example. There's almost no failure state, the puzzles are gentle, and the reward for playing is simply finding out what happened to the town. I finished it in one evening and thought about it for a week.

The trick these games pull off is trusting you. No waypoint arrows, no minimap covered in exclamation marks. They let you notice things, and that act of noticing is the gameplay. It's a quieter kind of fun that fits perfectly with playing on a phone at night.

If you've been drowning in games that demand daily logins and endless progression bars, try a story-first adventure as a reset. Play it slowly, with sound on. You might rediscover why you started gaming in the first place.
